Every video that you don't do is like a lottery ticket you burn.
Moses Wong
Content Creator
Moses Wong is a Malaysian content creator known for his comedy videos on TikTok, where he has more than 2.5 million followers. He grew up in Sarawak and studied graphic design, then spent several years as a designer at an events company and a creative agency. During the 2020 lockdowns, while living alone, he started making skits on TikTok, playing several characters himself. His fourth video went viral. For three years he made content alongside his full-time design job before he finally went full-time as a creator. Today he's known for his funny, everyday takes on Malaysian and Southeast Asian life, often mixing languages. He recently launched Crush Theory, a YouTube dating show that he hosts.
In this episode, Moses explains why he, like many creators, is an introvert, and why talking to a phone camera feels more like keeping a video diary than performing. He shares how he makes most of his videos in one or two takes without a script, and why getting the idea is much harder than shooting it. He also talks about learning where the line is in comedy, why he moved from character skits to sharing his own opinions, and what he's had to learn moving from short videos to long-form YouTube. Finally, he explains why he gets his ideas from friends rather than from scrolling other creators' content, and why every video you don't post is a lottery ticket you burn.
In Their Words
You don't have to make sure every single thing is perfect.
The hard part is getting the idea, not doing the idea.
Don't copy someone else, or you'll just be a shadow of that famous person.
It's okay to have someone inspire you, but always put your own spin on it.
